African History

This is a photograph of an African mask at the Leeds City Museum. I like how different colours are used to mimic face paint that some tribes use.

From Left: Mortar and Pestle – 1970 (has a bamboo-like texture); Storage Jar – 1900-1930 (rough and bumpy surface, tribe-like details); Gourd Bowl – 1970s (also has a bamboo-like texture); Wine Jar – 1976-1977 (is hollow and sounds like it is made out of metal or a tough material).

I photographed these items at the museum because i like to understand a culture through real items that might have been used/present at the time. I like to experience history through  touch.
