Cinefx

Cinefx sounds like a great software for editing, animation and visual effects, I could use it for editing my film but as I don’t have enough time to explore it, I might use it in another module.

cinefx_screenshot

It has a variety of professional features including:

• Variable frame rate control
• Real-time aspect ratio control
• RGBA color channel views
• A & B media playback channels with both A/B & A|B playback
• Full audio support (including audio only tracks)
• Real-time hardware based pan and zoom
• Dynamic edit points stored in the database
• Dynamic thumbnail generation
• GPU based visualization tools (RGB parade)

I am definitely going to give this a go in my spare time to test it out.

Shopping for my set

On Monday 29th November, Inonge, Mary, Chapman and I went to buy props for the set. We visited quite a few shops to find cheap plates, glasses and mugs that will be used on the set. We visited shops such as Wilkinsons, Home Bargains, Poundland, Pound Stretcher, Discounter UK, Morrisons, Art Craft Shops and loads more.

I bought 3 plates and a mug from Home Bargains,

4 glass set and a mug from Morrisons,

And I bought some invisible wire (fishing line), froma  craft shop.

We took the stuff to Inonge’s place because we would film there the next day.

3D Light Casting – Video Copilot

http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/3d_light_casting/

This link shows how to make an energy ball and I think it might take too long to do as I don’t have enough time to try this out and tweak it. I would have liked to use this to portray the entity in my film this way to make it look a lot more realistic. Another reason why I can’t use it is I need to use a Trapcode plug-in which I don’t have. I think it is a necessay element for this effect. So that is a disadvatage to why I can’t use this effect.

Dark Vally – Oskar Arnarson (Iceland)

http://www.filminute.com/2010/screeningroom/index.php?id=120

Watching this I think it was well filmed because I can tell from the beginning that in the middle of nowhere, the girl is alone in the car, giving the impression that she is isolated. She seems scared and worried because she feels like she’s not alone and something is out there. Looking around she cleans the condensed steam on the front window and moves the side mirror around for a better view of the rear –  that’s the part when we should expect something to happen and yet when it does we’re still surprised. I like the element of surprise in a film.

My Ghastly Ghostly Moodboard

This is a moodboard that i did in Photoshop. I wanted to inspire a scary theme and ghost’s unexpectable behaviour (Michael Jackson on the bottom right). On the bottom left I like the contrast of a live man almost holding a ghosly woman.

Final Cut Express: Setting up and adding audio

This video helped me with the sound effect I was adding to my film.

Inception (2010) – Review

In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job till date, Inception.

I found this film very exciting. I think the storyline takes the meaning of inception into literal terms. Inception meaning an event that is a beginning; a first part or stage of subsequent events. They explain in the film that the dream can leave the person changed and that this person could become an entire new person after inception. I like the effects that are done to bend the structure of a dream; how there are consequences if rules are broken. I found it really enticing to watch as I watched them go into three stages of dreams. A dream within a dream within a dream and if they die while they’re in a deep slumber they will go into a coma in real life rather than wake up; but in the dream their minds would be trapped in the “basement”.

Taking this risk into account they perform inception and I think that is what draws in the audiences attention. I think what traps the audience is when they get shot, the feeling that they might die and go into a coma is very intense and the audience watches further to see whether they survive or not. The ending was great but leaves the audience thinking “Well did the rest survive?”. A great mind boggling film.

Phone Ahn Byeong Ki (2002) – Nadine Hottenrott

http://www.theoneminutes.org/m20100150sr13…split-screen-art-cinema-one-minutes-Phone-Ahn-Byeong-Ki-2002-Nadine-Hottenrott

Majority of the one minute films on this website I found less useful than others. But a particular film I found  really good was a split screen video. I think this film contains clips of 4 different films or 4 clips from the same film. I like Japanese, Chinese and Korean film’s so I really found it good.

Research for the concept of my film

I wanted to create a paranormal activity scene for my 1 minute film. I have watched Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Entity, The Exorcist, etc and all the films in total give me the same feeling, a feeling of being isolated, alone and remote from the rest of the normal world. As I liked the idea of a paranormal scene, I thought it would be fun and creative to create the illusion of an entity being present.

Misko Pasaka – Viktoras Gundajevas

http://www.theoneminutes.org/m20090101sr10…world-one-minutes-Misko-Pasaka-Viktoras-Gundajevas

Oh my gosh!! That was unexpected! I like that it has the element of surprise because the wolf thought it was bein clever by deguising itself as a sheep. I like claymation because I like doing stop motion. It’s great how they took out the stop motion footage with real life footage of the environment.

Business As Usual – Michael Benni Pierce & Shaun Boyle (USA)

http://www.filminute.com/2010/screeningroom/index.php?id=118

It should be funny that the guy’s meant to literally rock out but I don’t know why I found it a little dry. Its good but it’s not my cup of tea.

Movies That Have Inspired Me To Make My Film

These films that I have listed below consist of haunting and possession. The reason I have chosen them is because I think their very good and influence the atmosphere I wanted for my film.

Paranormal Activity (2007) – I really like the part where Katie get pulled out of bed and gets dragged acroos the landing (moving away from camera: isolation), makes it more believable.

Paranormal Entity (2009) – The part that makes this film believable is at the end when she’s floating in mid air being raped and scratch by the entity. I like the fact that the entity is a demon and is identified. The demon steal souls but it’s creepy that the demon rapes first and then steals souls. It fouls her first before claiming a defamed person’s soul.

The Exorcist (1973) -The scene that I find makes this film all the more real and scary is when she crawls down the stairs backwards. The directors cut of this movie is far more scary and I think it’s better than the normal one.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose (2005) – The fact about this film, that makes it work, is that it starts off with us knowing that she is dead. It’s through the court case when the Priest is at trial and the story is told through him. I find it very engaging to watch as Emily speaks seven languages simultaneously because of the seven demons that have possessed her.

The Last Exorcism (2010) – This movie is a documentary and it’s filmed on the go to expose exorcism as a phony act to trick people into paying them. When they intrude into the house to find out where the girl is, they find her locked in her room talking to someone, they enter and she appears normal without anyone there with her and unexpectedly hearing noises the next time they run up to her room to find her on top of her wardrobe and this part is very creepy. What astounded me was how the demon that possessed her, tricked them into thinking that she is acting out this way, because she is not comfortable about telling her strict father, about her pregnancy (because they are a religious family). Yet later they find her and discover something they didn’t expect.

Why We Cray by 5secondfilms

Why We Cry – http://5secondfilms.com/watch/why_we_cry/

I find this short clip hilarious, talking onion’s voice and facial expression is very funny. I think rotoscoping has been done in this film using After Effects. Something like this could have been great as a concept for my film, but I have decided to do a supernatural clip, which will be portrayed as a found footage.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) – Review

As Harry races against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, he uncovers the existence of three most powerful objects in the wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows.

I watched this film at the Vue Cinema with Ben and Inonge  today. It was a lot better than the last one, The Half Blood Prince. I think this is because the adventure didn’t include Hermione and Ron. In all the other films it does, so that is the only thing I could think off. It’s fun seeing teenage wizards getting up to mischief and doing things for the right reasons by breaking rules. I like the fantasy genre and prefer it more even though I like watching films that are based on real life stories or documentaries. I think I like it a lot because I would love for the good things in the film to actually exist. The visual FX and cinematography is unbelievable and I find it capturing me and makes me feel like I’m inside that sort of world for the time being.

Echoes – John Riley (UK / Romania)

http://www.filminute.com/2010/screeningroom/index.php?id=123

A very good storyline. The present self can see his future self and the future self can see his past self. Almost like two parallel universes at a window (the mirror), It sort of gives the feeling like he’s got a psychological condition because the location and the situation made me feel like he need psychological help: it felt like he was in a hospital. It’s confusing  but I like complicated movies that have to be figured out by putting together the pieces and unfolding it in our minds. The downfall I think is the woman’s acting. It wasn’t believable. Other than that I think the storyline and the film was good.

Guilt Trip by 5secondfilms

The message on the post card is not effecting them the way the person that sent it wanted it too. I think it’s more of a tongue-in-cheek comedy.
